Last Season
Three assists in 29 games, minus-16, on fourteen and a half minutes a night. The minus-16 in that few games is a hard number to explain away, and it came in the largest NHL opportunity he has had.
The Finesse Game
The tools are real enough: he is a right shot, he is 6-4, and he has a genuinely heavy point shot that he gets through traffic. He put up points in junior and in the AHL, and the offensive instincts are the reason he keeps getting chances.
At NHL speed the reads have not held up. He is a step slow closing gaps, and once the play is inside his own blue line the decisions come too late — which is what the plus-minus is describing.
The Physical Game
Two hundred and eleven pounds and long, and he is willing enough along the wall. He does not consistently win the front of his net against strong forwards, and the foot speed limits how much of his size he can actually bring to bear.
The Intangibles
He was a third-round pick who has now been through three organizations, and the thing that has cost him most is availability — the injuries have come at exactly the ages when a defenseman is supposed to be establishing himself.
Twenty-six this season with 51 NHL games on his record. He is out of the window where a prospect gets patience, and this is likely his last look as anything other than organizational depth.
