Nine games, a .872 save percentage, a 4.12 goals-against average. Across 39 career NHL games he is at .894, and the trend line inside that is going the wrong way.
The Physical Game
Six feet even, which in a league of 6-4 goaltenders is genuinely small, and he plays a style built entirely on tracking rather than blocking. He reads releases early, catches pucks he has no business catching, and his glove is legitimately excellent.
The cost of that style is that when he is beaten, he is beaten cleanly — there is less of him to hit by accident. He plays deeper than a goaltender his size can afford to, which is the single most common technical note on him, and shots from distance that a bigger goaltender absorbs go past him.
He is quick and flexible and the athleticism is not in question.
The Mental Game
He was a phenomenon at Northeastern, put up numbers nobody had seen in years, and has spent three professional seasons discovering that NHL shooters do not miss. He has handled that publicly with more grace than most twenty-four-year-olds would.
The Intangibles
The gap between what he was in college and what he has been as a professional is now wide enough that it is the central fact about him. Goaltenders develop late and strangely, and it is far too early to write him off; it is also no longer early enough to call the NHL results a small sample.
